Looking at my "A" variety of the Bluewater badge and having a wife that has a 4 needle profesional type embroidery machine I will give my opinion of why the stiching is over the merrow (rolled edge) border. Small shops could buy pre bordered round badges of various sizes, then use a sticky stabilizer to hold the badge in the hoop to do the embroidery on the badge. If the badge is not placed accurately on the stablizer backing, the design might stich over the border. My wife does simular things like this when she is embroidering applique items for quilts that she makes.

Thanks John and Steve. I guess I just keep getting stuck with bad trades.

I have the same as John has, even down to both having the different manufacturer's stickers on the back.

My "a" version looks just like the image in the gallery. The beads definitely overlap the border. From a production point of view I would guess that the border and the BLUEWATER text were simply stitched before the rest of the badge. Both my "a" and "b" versions retain the manufacturers' labels on the back. The "a" version is from Artwear Plus in Sarnia while the "b" version is from Zone West. Perhaps the smaller local shop isn't as expert as the Zone West folks?

Does anybody have a Bluewater badge (ON B21a) similar to the one shown in the digital catalogue? ... n&type=AND

I have tried several times to complete a trade and each time I end up with what I believe is the B variety of the badge with the beads and feathers right next to the border.

The image in the digital catalogue shows the beads and feathers were stitched over the merrow stitch border. From a production standpoint this would be difficult and expensive to do so I question if it exists. The 7th and 8th editions of the catalogue and the digital catalogue says "Swiss, Rolled edge, Circular. Beads of feather design overlap badge border"

Interestingly enough in the The Collector’s Guide to Canadian Badges - The region, district, council and area badges of Ontario that Anthony Palmer produced in 2016 the description says "a) Swiss, rolled edge, circular; Beads are against border."

Do we need to revise the entry in the catalogue or does the "Beads and feather design overlap badge border" variety exist?
